About the Candidate
Hey there
Having grown up on the Taieri and spent time studying and working in Wellington, I moved to Milton in 2014 where I have owned and operated the picture framing shop since.
My studies in Wellington saw me complete a Bachelor of Design with Honours in 2007 and I have worked predominantly as a freelance graphic designer since. I’ve worked with a variety of clients including those in the arts, biotechnology, primary industries, and sports organisations. The most important part of this job is to listen to what the client needs – every decision I make is informed by what they tell me.These skills have also translated well in my work as a picture framer. Every project is a new challenge and I am constantly learning – when it all comes together the outcomes are rewarding.Since late 2023 I have been on the Creative Communities Assessment Committee for the Clutha District – I am a big advocate for the arts and I enjoy getting to see what creative projects people are doing in our district as part of this role.My career so far has been varied and the people I have worked with just as varied. I feel one of my best skills is being able to get on with most people no matter their political persuasion or background.Thank you for considering me for Milton Ward.
My Focus
A Resilient Community
It’s time to start doing more than just talk about Climate Change.
One of the biggest issues we face is how our climate is changing and bringing with it more severe weather events. While we need to keep discussing and planning for the long term, we must take practical steps to protect and future-proof our community now. With Milton being on a flood plain, making sure we are properly maintaining existing flood prevention measures is a key part of achieving this goal.
My Focus
A Vibrant Community
Creating a vibrant community should be about more than just planting trees down the main street.
A big part of what makes a town vibrant are its businesses. We need to continue to look at creative ways to help and promote existing local businesses so they continue to thrive as well as drawing new businesses to Milton. Many people now work from home or have the ability to work from anywhere in the country – let’s get the word out about what we have to offer and get them here. Our green spaces can do more than just look pretty. Encouragement should be given to groups or individuals looking to start community gardens on vacant council-owned land, especially if that land is years away from development. Planting fruit trees in our parks should be considered if re-planting is needed or new green areas are developed. Given the current financial pressures on many people, having these urban gardens is a great way to provide fruit and vegetables to our community.
My Focus
Better Processes
Council needs to be better at listening to, and engaging with, our community.
As a business owner and retailer on Union Street I have had a front row seat for many of the discussions around Milton’s main street upgrade. I’ve been a vocal critic of what I see as a flawed design process, and how the concerns of our businesses and retailers were met by Council. We need a clean and tidy town and the interests of businesses need to be weighed against those of residents, absolutely. But let’s have these discussions at the start of the planning process and deliver outcomes that enhance our town without threatening livelihoods.
